Roger Newbury, who faces a £50 a week pay cut after his job was reclassified

A pay cut of almost £50 a week could force beach cleaner Roger Newbury to quit his job.

Mr Newbury keeps Whitstable’s seafront tidy and litter free and has won praise from visitors and residents.

But now his job has been reclassified as seasonal by employers Serco which means his pay has dropped and he receives no other benefits.

Mr Newbury, 56, who lives at Bekesbourne, said: “I don’t know whether I can afford to continue.”

Serco environmental manager Chris Seer said he would speak to Mr Newbury to address any problems.
