About 110 birds have been rescued after a fire in an aviary.

But 30 birds died in the blaze in Wateringbury Road, East Malling, which is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

Firefighters were called to a fire on the property at about 2.20pm on Thursday. They found a large barn and two outbuildings, housing 140 finches and canaries, alight.

They managed to put out the fire in under an hour.

Watch manager Mitchell Kelly, who was at the scene, said: "We managed to ventilate the barn saving approximately 110 of the birds but sadly about 30 perished in the fire, which also destroyed 5 per cent of the buildings."
