An RAF helicopter and a lifeboat were involved in the rescue of two men from a yacht that was sinking close to the wreck of SS Richard Montgomery off the coast of Sheerness.

Thames Coastguard received a distress call from the 22ft yacht 'Gwendoline' at around 2.25pm Monday.

The vessel was sinking three miles north-east of the Montgomery wreck.

The Sheerness lifeboat found the yacht around six miles east of Garrision Point.

Both yachtsmen - brothers in their fifties, one from London and one from Aldershot - were transferred to the lifeboat.

Neither needed medical treatment. The stricken yacht was towed to Queenborough harbour.
