A bus driver has spoken about the moment he abandoned his bus route to rescue a young man impaled on railings.

Pete Snowdon, 50, had just started his shift on Arriva’s 182 service on Saturday morning when he spotted a young man hanging by his arm from metal railings in Sturdee Avenue, Gillingham.

Mr Snowdon abandoned his empty bus and ran over to support the weight of the young man while dialling 999 on his mobile.

Mr Snowdon said: “I wouldn’t say I was a hero. He looked as if he was on a coat hook but there wasn’t a lot of blood.”

Medway firefighters managed to free the young man from the boundary fence of Barnsole Infant School with a hydraulic cutter and an electric saw.

He was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital with the railing still in his arm. Police are investigating.
