Kent fuel campaigner Peter Carroll has welcomed further calls for the government to scrap the 3p rise in duty.

A cross-party group of 28 MPs is backing an amendment to the Budget to cancel the increase.

It would see the amount of tax we pay on a litre of fuel rising to 86p this August.

Folkestone's Peter Carroll, founder of lobby group FairFuelUK, said cancelling the increase would help the economy.

Mr Carroll said: "We've got families who are having to choose whether to feed themselves or put fuel in the family car, businesses that operate vans really struggling to make any money and road hauliers are really under the kosh.

"It's not necessary. One of the key things we've shown the government is research that if they cut fuel duty the economy actually grows quicker, they got more tax overall and everyone can be a winner."
