Steve Hafner rescued a point for Chatham with a long-distance strike but manager Alex O’Brien knew his side could have taken so much more.

A dominant second-half display went unrewarded in Ryman League Division 1 South on Saturday and Chats had to settle for a point.

Hafner lobbed the visiting keeper from inside the centre circle with a free-kick just six minutes after Tom Lawley’s 23rd-minute opener for Horsham.

A change of formation helped put Chatham firmly in control in the second half but the winning goal never came.

O’Brien said: “At half-time we lost Richard Avery and Mark Green to injury but we re-grouped and changed it around with Lee Barnett playing just behind the front two as we thought let’s get at them.

“We were fantastic in the second half and we had six or seven chances but we just didn’t have that killer touch. We went forward looking to score and we were praying that one would go in because then others would follow.”

Chatham travel to league leaders Croydon Athletic on Tuesday night.
