An elderly man is fighting for his life in hospital after the car he was driving plunged 20ft down a cliff.

Police say the man, who is believed to be in his seventies, was freed from his Honda Civic and taken to hospital.

He suffered serious head injuries in the crash, which happened on Paragon Street, Ramsgate at around 12.30pm Friday.

He is at Margate's QEQM Hospital and his condition is described as life threatening.

Emma Collins, who works at nearby film production company MEDB Films, said: "I've been told the car spun out of control, crashed through safety barriers and fell onto the main road down to the harbour.

"It's incredibly lucky that no-one else seems to have been hurt."

The area has been cordoned off whilst officers from Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit examine the scene.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the witness appeal line on 01622 798538.
