PLANS for an all weather sports pitch at Minster College on Sheppey have been submitted to the borough council.

The school has won funding from the New Opportunities Fund to build a floodlit synthetic turf pitch in its grounds off Minster Road.

If granted planning permission, the pitch would be used by pupils and community sports teams. It is specifically designed for football and rugby and would be made with the same material used for Premiership club training ground pitches.

Several Sheppey soccer teams and the rugby club have already expressed an interest in using the pitch.

Deputy head teacher David Wilkinson said: "It allows quality training to take place all year around without any risk of having to cancel matches due to the state of the pitch.

"It offers a great opportunity for youngsters at the school and in the local community to progress and continue playing sport."

The pitch will cost an estimated £400,000 to build. Kent County Council has agreed to pay for the school's changing rooms to be refurbished to Sport England standard.
