Community centre plan "non-starter"

A former council office will not be turned into a community centre, it has been confirmed.

Campaigners wanted to create a community and further education complex in the old Tunbridge Wells council offices in Cranbrook High Street.

But councillors decided on Thursday that the plan, put forward by the Weald Centre Group (WCG), lacked detail and could prove financially risky for the town's taxpayers.

The council's cabinet branded the idea a "non-starter" because of the difficulty of getting the £3.35 million funding required.

It brings to an end a drawn-out battle over the future of the offices.

The council will now put together a business case for redeveloping the town's library, in Carriers Road, to include a community centre.
