Compensation is being offered to rail passengers who faced hours of chaos last night.

Southeastern has apologised after a signal failure at Sittingbourne diverted trains on the line, which travels through Medway and Maidstone.

Passengers were said to be stranded in the County Town, but the problem has now been fixed.

A spokesman for the operator said: “Network Rail had major signal problems from 6.30pm which continued pretty much through the rest of the evening.

“We ordered replacement buses straight away but because of the rush hour, they took a long time to arrive. It was a difficult evening.”

The spokesman added: “There is a form on our website where those who were delayed for more than 30 minutes can claim compensation.”
