Young defender Connor Essam is hoping he can be the answer to Gillingham’s problems at the back.

The centre-back was recalled to Priestfield from a loan spell with Dartford by manager Andy Hessenthaler after his Gills side conceded eight goals in their last two games.

Essam, 19, will have to wait a little longer for his opportunity – should Hessenthaler select him – after Saturday’s League 2 game at home to Hereford was postponed, but after 18 months of waiting he’s taking it all in his stride.

Essam said: "I am quite a patient person and when you are a youngster you have to be.

"Obviously the postponement was gutting but I am sure there will be another opportunity at some point.

"It’s the fittest I have felt and I am playing the best football I have ever played. That’s mainly thanks to the loan I had at Dartford.

"I am improving as a player and I am ready."
