THE government has backed down on proposals to take planning powers away from county councils.

Kent County Council's cabinet member Alex King says expertise would have been lost if all the decisions had been left to regional bodies.

He says local knowledge is vital in an area like the South East, spanning from Milton Keynes to Hampshire and Kent.
