Thousands of hardy show-goers will be laughing off forecasts of
rain as the county's biggest event goes into the weekend.

For farmers, showing off their prize cattle at the county's
greatest agricultural institution is an honour in itself.

The thought of winning a ribbon for their top animal is what
makes worthwhile the hours of care and effort that go towards
upkeeping this quintessentially Kentish tradition.

Aside from the odd 'moo' and pulling at their muzzles, these
creatures are on their best behaviour and in the very peak of
condition, which is why families travel from all four corners of
Kent to see the County Show at Detling's Kent Showground.

Running until tomorrow, all kinds of groups pitch up to share
their ideas and show off age old crafts like basket making and
sheep shearing.

Birds of prey demonstrations, Titan the Robot, police dog shows
and terrier racing add to the action.

Music each day from Kentish bands, hula-hoop workshops and Punch
and Judy shows take place around the village green.

The county's heritage is saluted with stands from vintage
vehicles, steam trains and farming machinery.

There will also be more homely activities like apple pie tasting
and cooking demonstrations.
