Danny Jackman departed Priestfield on Saturday and was left overwhelmed by the reaction from the Gillingham supporters.

Jackman won the player-of-the-year award last season and has been a popular figure at Priestfield during his two spells at the club.

He left for Blue Square Bet Premier promotion-chasers Kidderminster on an 18-month deal to end his second stint at the club and he admitted it was tough.

He said: "The response I have had has been overwhelming. I can’t get back to every individual but would like to thank them for all of their support over the years since I have been there.

"It’s sad the way it’s panned out but I hope they get back into the league they should be.

"I am gutted because I wanted to finish on a high and that’s the way the club look to be going this season. It is disappointing that I won’t be involved but that’s football and you have to respect other people’s opinions.

"There are a lot of good memories for me there. I was at the club for a long time and it’s a club close to my heart. I remember when I re-signed and got the reception I did, it was spectacular and one I won’t forget.

"I will also remember playing at home and kicking toward the Rainham End. It was always a great feeling to kick toward your home fans in the second half and those are the things I will miss. I just wish the fans all the best for the season."

Jackman, 30, made 178 appearances for the club but found his chances under current boss Martin Allen limited.
