EDF engineers carry out permanent repairs to major electricity cables on a bridge over Dartford Creek

EDF Energy could be hit with a £2 million penalty for its part in a blackout which left swathes of Dartford without power.

Electricity watchdogs Ofgem have said they are "minded to" impose the fine having judged the utility giant could have done more to prevent the disaster, which cut supplies to almost 100,000 homes in July last year.

The proposal comes in a long-awaited report on the incident, which is now the subject of a month-long consultation. However, it is still unclear as to whether affected residents and business will be eligible for further compensation.
