The HGV is cleared with the help of Police shortly after the incident in Oxford Street on Friday morning

A heavy goods lorry driver was left red-faced after hitting a railway bridge and displacing his load.

The incident this morning caused traffic chaos in Oxford Street, Whitstable and disrupted train services across east Kent.

The large lorry hit difficulties when trying to pass under the low bridge. The top of the vehicle was unable to even scrape through and instead the load was left wobbling on the trailer.

Police were sent to the scene at 11.30am to direct traffic which built up at the junction with Belmont Road.

Although the driver had managed to reverse the lorry, officers thought it best not to push their luck any further and risk shedding the precariously balanced load of propane balls, used in injection modelling.

Rail engineers had to be called to inspect the bridge for damage, and delays of up to half and hour were reported between Faversham and Margate with some services even facing cancellation.
