Voters are being urged to sign up and register to have their say on who should govern the country on June 8.

The deadline to register to vote is days away - Monday 22 - and there are signs suggesting that younger voters in particular may be losing the opportunity to take part.

Analysis shows that the numbers of 16-17-year-olds registering as what are known as attainers has plummeted.

Young people are entitled to be listed from the age of 16 so that that are automatically added to the electoral register when they reach 18.

But an analysis by the Electoral Reform Society (ERS) revealed the number of so-called ‘attainers’ listed had fallen by 27 per cent across the UK between 2013 and 2016.

Katie Ghose, its chief executive, said: “These findings should sound the alarm to young people across the country that they need to register to vote if they want to have their say on 8 June.”

“There is a real risk that this election could be one where the registration time bomb goes off – leaving hundreds of thousands without a voice.”

If you are already registered to vote, you do not need to register to vote again for the UK general election.

If you are not registered to vote, you will need to register by Monday 22 May in order to vote on 8 June.
