Driver flees after M2 pile-up

A car driver involved in a three-vehicle crash on the M2 had fled from the scene by the time the emergency services arrived.

The accident took place early on Monday morning just after the Junction 4 Gillingham turn-off on the coastbound carriageway. Emergency services were called to the scene at 12.20am.

A car, a motorbike and a coach were involved in the pile -up.

The motorcyclist suffered a fractured foot.

The carriageway was closed until 2.15am.

It was a busy night for the emergency services, as three separate crashes took place on the M2.

The first happened at 6.30pm on the slip road of Junction 1 towards Grain. A young male driver lost control of his car and collided with the crash barrier. It is thought he suffered minor injuries.

Police were called to a second crash at 8.30pm on the coastbound carriageway, just after Junction 4 for Gillingham.

Two vehicles were involved, a Peugeot Campervan and a Nissan Primera. The van ended up on its side across two lanes.

Three people suffered minor injuries and were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

The slip-road was closed and coastbound traffic was diverted off at Junction 4 while the two vehicles were recovered and debris was cleared away by Highways staff.

The road was fully re-opened shortly after 10pm. The cause of the collision is not yet known.
