Sentenced: Shaun Waters

A young father who was "mucking about" when his driving caused the death of two teenage passengers has been jailed for five years.

Shaun Waters, who was also banned from driving for seven years, had been "snaking" over the A20 near Lenham on February 28 last year before crashing head-on into a lorry.

Joseph Bunce, 17, and 14-year-old Daisy Washington, from Ashford, were killed. Waters and Daisy’s school friend Alaina Cowell were badly injured. Water’s stepdaughter, aged five, escaped injury.

Waters, of Magpie Hall Road, Chatham, denied two charges of causing death by dangerous driving but was convicted of both at Maidstone Crown Court last month.

Passing sentence today, Judge James O'Mahony told the 22-year-old former soldier in a packed courtroom: "If I were to pass a sentence of 100 years on you it would not restore those lost lives. The fact is I have to pass sentence within guidelines I am bound to follow."

Joe's mother, Lorraine Bunce, of Harrietsham, said she accepted the sentence but could never forgive Waters.

"I'm disappointed but whatever it was, long or short, it will never make up for what we have gone through," she said.
