He suffered a head injury when the car ploughed into a roundabout and is now in a stable but critical condition.

The driver, a 22-year-old man from Maidstone, escaped without injury.

He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink-driving and taken into police custody. He has since been released on police bail until July 16.

Police, paramedicss and two fire crews were called to the crash in Swale Way, Kemsley, at 9.30pm.

Firefighters put out the blaze, thought to have been caused by the impact of the crash, but the car was destroyed.

It is understood the blue Fiat Coupe was driving from the Eurolink estate. No other vehicles were involved.

The injured man was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital, but moved to King’s College Hospital in London on Wednesday.

Witnesses are urged to phone the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538.
