School percussionists hoping to drum up some success at the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth

Percussionists from Thanet hope to drum up success when they represent the south east at the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth.

The community percussion school will perform an updated reworking of their energetic and innovative piece Chairs, which is in the style of the world-renowned “junk” ensemble, Stomp.

The drummers qualified from the regional heats at Tonbridge and now go forward to the finals that will be held at Birmingham Conservatoire throughout this week with seven other groups.

Molly Hollman, director of the percussion group, said: “This is a magnificent effort - it already puts us in the top eight percussion ensembles in the country.”

The drumming groups were developed at Chatham House Grammar School, Ramsgate, through lottery funding.

In recent years they have performed at the Music for Youth schools prom at the Royal Festival Hall in London, in an exhibition show at the Royal Albert Hall, and at the opening of the redeveloped Bullring centre in Birmingham.
