A LEGAL clerk from Kent made her debut television appearance this week after being plucked from obscurity while walking through London.

Emma Jane Phillips, from Strood, was travelling between job appointments in Westminister when she was spotted by talent scouts for an advertising company. She was approached and asked to go along for an audition for an advert. Although somewhat dubious, Emma allowed her her picture be taken and agreed to go to Soho over the weekend for an audition.

During the audition Emma, 27, was asked to sit at a table and make a variety of facial expressions. That night she was called to say she fitted the part and was invited to film a new advert for Typhoo tea, in a warehouse in the West End.

She said: "I couldn't believe it all really. It was very bizarre and a bit crazy. I just found it really amusing." The advert was shown for the first time during GMTV on Monday morning.

Emma, a former student at Rochester Grammar School, said: "My mum saw it and thought it was brilliant. I can't wait to see it." The advert sees Emma taking the role of a secretary sitting in a meeting, dressed in her usual work attire.

She nods and wiggles her pen in the right places before one of her work colleagues suddenly takes a funny turn. He only calms down when he is given a cup of tea.

A spokesman for the PR company said: "Emma Jane was chosen because she fitted the part and looked like an office worker. The idea was to create a strong, humourous ad which would eventually go the same way as the Tango ads."

After her three minutes of fame Emma, works in Middlesex, has now got the bug to do it again. She said: "It was fantastic. A lot easier than what I normally have to do."
