ABOUT 360 jobs are to go at an automotive parts company in Medway after bosses decided to shift the pump production to Brazil.

Hobourn Automotive, of Priory Road, Strood, will maintain only a small presence in the town. The company established the site in Strood in 1946 and its products include power-assist steering pumps, oil lubrication pumps and engine front covers. Workers at the eight-acre site were told the news yesterday but will not finally have to go until the end of next year.

The company is moving its European operation to Sao Paulo because of the cheaper labour costs, but is likely to maintain a few staff in Strood.

The decision is part of restructuring within Dana's engine and fluid management group. Dana Corporation is one of the world's largest suppliers to vehicle manufacturers of components, modules and complete systems.

A Medway Council spokesman said: "The council has been working very closely with the company and has met with representatives regularly over the past three to six months.

"We are aware that there has been issues surrounding the industry, in which the company is involved, on a global basis."
