Ex-mayor and 'exceptional ambassador' dies

ANDY ANDERSON: Rochester councillor for 22 years

ONE of Rochester's greatest ambassadors, Andy Anderson, as died at the age of 94. Mr Anderson, mayor of the city during the Festival of Britain and president of the Medway Towns Conservative Association, had been ill in a local nursing home for some time.

His wife, Alice, died in the same nursing home about three years ago. The couple first met at a ball in Chtaham Town hall whehn they were both 16.

Mr Anderson was a councillor for Rochester for 22 years from 1936, founded Kent Art Printers and was well respected throughout the towns.

Tom Mason, the veteran Medway councillor who served with Mr Anderson, said: "He was a very enthusiastic and exceptional ambassador for Rochester. He went around the world promoting the city. He made a considerable contribution to the life of the towns and our sympathies go to his family."

The funeral takes place at Medway Crematorium on Friday (October 17) at 11am.
