Exam students advised not to panic

ANXIOUS students whose A-level results have not matched or have even exceeded their expectations are being told not to panic.

With results out on Thursday, the advice comes from the University of Kent which says the clearing system can usually help them find a suitable place.

But admissions officer for the school of physical sciences at the UKC, Becky Parker acknowledges it can be an anxious time. She said: "I know exactly what it can be like because I used to be head of science at a local grammar school.

"It's bound to be a bit painful but don't just sit and worry about it because things will work out."

She believes it is a good time to be applying to university because applicants stand a good chance of finding the right course.

Her top tip for dealing with a results dilemma is to be flexible when checking out what courses are available.

The UCAS web site carries vacancies as well as the UKC's own site www.kent.ac.uk/clearing

But Ms Parker advises not getting parents or anyone else to call universities on your behalf. "It just looks weedy - it's your future and universities will want to know who you are," she said.

"Think carefully and write down all the questions you want to ask before phoning. Admissions officers are more likely to be impressed if you are well prepared.

"Keep in touch and leave a contact number but don't be embarrassed to refuse an offer after you have given yourself time to consider it."
