Funding issues have forced the closure of the Canterbury and Thanet Young Carers’ Project.

A party at Whitstable Rugby Club marked the end of 13 years of providing support for youngsters who care for a parent, sibling or other relative.

Christine Jacobs, who has been the project manager for the last nine, said: “There were an awful lot of tears, but it was also a chance for everyone to celebrate the good that has been done over the years.

“It’s absolutely devastating that it has come to this and I feel very deeply for all the kids involved.

“Alternative provisions are being put in place, but a lot of the young carers have built up trust with us and they don’t want to have to switch.”
