MORE than 20 firefighters battled a fire in a barn filled with straw and fertiliser.

Fire crews from stations including Lenham, Headcorn, Charing and Ashford were called to the blaze, which began at around 10pm on Monday in Crumps Lane, Ulcombe.

When they arrived, the barn and about 80 bales of straw were well alight. Four tons of fertiliser was also involved and a chemical unit was sent to the scene.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service also sent three fire engines plus a water unit and an incident support unit. Up to 25 firefighters were involved in tacking the blaze at its height.
