Scales of justice

Four courts in Kent are facing closure under government plans to streamline the justice system, it was revealed today.

Ashford Magistrates' Court, in Tufton Street, and Sittingbourne Magistrates' Court, in Park Road, are at risk.

So are the county courts in Ashford - based in the same building as the magistrates' court - and Gravesend, in King Street.

It follows today's government announcement that 157 courts will close across England and Wales.

Justice Secretary Ken Clarke said the move could save £15 million a year.

It is known at this stage how many jobs could be under threat.
