The recent icy conditions may have kept all but the hardiest of folk indoors - but they proved ideal for dozens of Kent karate students.

Up to 80 adults and youngsters braved the chilly sea at Joss Bay, near Broadstairs, to sample Kyokushinkai - a traditional form of karate that, in Japan, is often practised on the beach, under waterfalls or in the snow.

Participants say that Kyokushinkai karate improves reactions, awareness and concentration, and also helps to build self-confidence and stamina.

Dressed only in a Gi, the characteristic white karate suit, students of all abilities represented 13 clubs from across the county.

Kevin Charles, one of the instructors, said: "It was hard, tough and certainly involved getting wet! But there’s nothing like running through soft sand and doing press-ups and sit-ups in the sea to improve your health and well-being."
