Sailor Hilary Lister

Dunkirk quadriplegic sailor Hilary Lister will make a fresh attempt to sail around Britain next summer.

Bad weather, technical difficulties and injuries to her crew hampered the 35 year old’s first attempt last summer.

She was forced to abandon in August at Newlyn in Cornwall, two months after setting off from Dover.

Hilary admits the conditions were appalling: “We picked our days, but we did have one or two where the wind really blew up in our faces.”

She added: “It was very rough in a small boat, but I only had one moment where I was really scared, when I had to squeeze through a gap between two very expensive boats.”

The announcement of Hilary’s latest attempt was made on Wednesday at the Sail, Power and Watersports Show at Earl’s Court, London.

Hilary and her crew will be appearing there until the show closes this Sunday.

In 2005, she became the first quadriplegic person to sail solo across the Channel in August 2005, using her pioneering sip-and-puff breathing technique to steer the boat.
