A student has created a new classroom for children in Africa to help ease overcrowding.

Alex Wylde, of Park Lane, Bethersden, taught 40 nursery school youngsters aged two to seven, crammed in one room, during a charity stint in Tanzania.

But she took over a nearby outbuilding and redecorated it and, through her sponsors, paid the rent.

She said: “There were too many in the class and the children at that age range were at different learning levels.

“With the new room I was able to split the age groups to some extent.”

Miss Wylde paid the £40 six month’s rent from money provided by one of her sponsors for the trip, Tenterden Lions.

She completed a three-month trip to Tanzania, near Kilimanjaro, teaching English and maths as part of her gap year.
