A gas leak which threw a road into turmoil is being treated as suspicious.

Crime scene investigators are at the scene of the leak in Burley Road, Sittingbourne.

It comes after a 100-metre cordon was thrown around a derelict property there when a gas leak was reported at around 12.30pm this afternoon. It has now been lifted.

Nearby residents were told to avoid the area as police and firefighters investigated.

Southern Gas arrived at the scene shortly afterwards to help make the scene safe and EDF Energy were there to shut off any electricity supply to the property.

The road was eventually reopened just after 3pm.
