A trio of potential signings fell through for the Gills before the weekend.

Manager Martin Allen was hoping to add extra quality to his squad with the new season on the horizon. But he revealed how his hopes were dashed by a series of setbacks.

Allen (pictured) said: "One fell through, which is not good news, one we had a chief executive who was not working on it and has delayed it for some reason and another club, from a higher division, have come in for a player that we were close to getting.

"The three we thought we were close on all toppled on Friday."

Allen has seen five new signings arrive so far this summer, with goalkeepers Tommy Forecast and Stuart Nelson joined by Ben Strevens, Charlie Allen and Tom Flanagan.

He will now liaise with chairman Paul Scally and director of football Andy Hessenthaler to chase other potential targets.

"It’s fine," he said. "We will go back in and work on things and get cracking for what lies ahead and see if we can get a couple more in.

"It’s no blow to me though. If they come, they come and if they don’t, I don’t bang my head against my desk and stress out over it. What will be will be."

Is it vital that the Gills bring in new signings? Comment below.
