Gillingham chairman Paul Scally treated the 28 visiting Accrington fans to burger and chips on Saturday, ensuring they went home with something to smile about.

Mr Scally, pictured, recognised the efforts the small band of travelling supporters had made to get to the game as they battled through blizzards and freezing temperatures up north to cheer their relegation-threatened side who lost 1-0 at Priestfield.

“I felt it was such a good effort of them coming down that we should try and do something for them,” said the Gills chairman, who followed the action from sunny Dubai.

“I called my safety officer, in the crowd control room, and told him to go and get burger and chips and a cup of tea for all the 28 fans just before the end of the game.

“It was a magnificent effort by the 28. I would have liked to have done more for them but at least we could send them home with something to warm them up.”

Reflecting on another three points for his team, Mr Scally said: “It was a bit of a battle. It’s not always going to be pretty when you play these teams at the bottom, but what’s important is that we didn’t concede and won the game.”
