Paul Scally and the Gills face a season back in League 2

The prospect of playing League 2 football next season is not one that has caught the imagination of Gillingham chairman Paul Scally.

The Gills were relegated from League 1 on the final day of last season, just a year after winning the League 2 play-off final at Wembley.

Mr Scally said: "I’m looking forward to the season, in that we need to get it under way now, have a real push and try and get our lives back to some sort of normality again but I’m not particularly looking forward to League 2.

"I’m not being snobbish, I’m just being realistic.

"We are where we are and we have to deal with it. I’m disappointed we are in this division and I’ve been quite effected by the drop. I’m just looking forward to getting under way and trying to get out of it again.

"I would far rather be in League 1 pushing for the Championship than in League 2 pushing for League 1. We have a very good set of players and a good management team now. We’re surrounded by winners and we just need to go out and perform. The trouble is with some of these fixtures, we’re not necessarily playing quality teams.

"We’ll be playing teams who give 90 minutes of effort and play it their way. We have to deal with those sort of situations.

"The fans must be feeling very fed up by it all but they love the club, support the club and they’ve shown that in the way they’ve come out and bought their (season) tickets and snapped up the sponsorship opportunities. We are all in the boat together and everyone I’m sure is as frustrated as me."
