Gillingham boss Mark Stimson is looking to replace the injured Scott Vernon

Gillingham boss Mark Stimson is lining up yet another striker to help boost their League 1 campaign.

Stimson, pictured, got “very close” to bringing in a fresh partner for leading scorer Simeon Jackson ahead of Saturday’s derby with Charlton.

Gillingham are back on the search for a striker after loanee Scott Vernon returned to Colchester with an ankle injury and Stimson believes he’s found the ideal replacement.

Stimson will have to sit patiently, however, to see if he can complete the deal.

“We were very close but unfortunately it’s been held up by his club,” said Stimson. “I think he’s going to be playing in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night and if he doesn’t then there is a possibility of him coming and joining us in the middle of the week.

“He’s scored a few goals and he’s at a proper club. If we could get him it would be a big, big scoop.”
