Gillingham's winning run on the road ended at the weekend although boss Martin Allen had nothing but praise for his side.

The Gills had to settle for a goalless draw at Oxford but they remain top of League 2 – three points clear – with a quarter of the season gone.

Before the weekend Allen’s side had won their first five away games in the league.

He said: "We are six games away unbeaten so that’s still going and it’s been a fantastic achievement by the players and supporters. Five wins and a draw is pretty good going but there is so much more still to come.

"We couldn’t just make the breakthrough at Oxford and it’s a sign of the times that people are a little disappointed that we only got a point away from home. It is credit to the players."

And Allen (pictured) was thrilled to be backed by over 1,000 travelling fans at Oxford. He said: "The paying public are not experts but they have watched football for a long time and they are not stupid.

"They know what they are watching, they know when their players are having a go, when the team is organised, is committed to the club and when the players are giving it everything they’ve got."

He added: "We are always trying to improve on what we’ve got. The chairman has given us unbelievable backing financially to bring more players in than I expected and hoped for, and even dreamed about. The club is moving forward and I am sure 1,000 supporters, which was amazing, have gone home and told their families that the lads did well."

Is the disappointment felt in some quarters of Gillingham only getting an away point a measure of just how far the club have come this season? Have your say below.
