Adebayo Akinfenwa has fired
off an early warning to the rest of League 2 by announcing the best
is yet to come.

The powerful striker,
pictured, came off the bench to score a debut goal and ensure
Gillingham started their new season with a point against
Cheltenham.

Akinfenwa pounced with 14 minutes left
to cap an encouraging all-round display and said: "There is more to
come and I’m not where I want to be conditioning-wise.

"I haven’t had a full pre-season, but
the gaffer is working me hard and I’m getting sharper. Saturday
would have done me the world of good and there will be a bit more
of me to see. The complete Akinfenwa will be there soon."

Akinfenwa bagged 17 goals for
Northampton last season and is aiming for more this time around
once he gets himself up to full fitness.

"When I’m on the pitch a fair bit, I
know I’m going to score," he said. "I’ll get fit and I’m always
confident I will get goals.

"Whenever the gaffer needs me I am
ready to go. I am not a bench player and I’ll be looking to start
soon.

"I don’t know if I can last 90 yet but
I’ll give it a go if he wants me. I am up for selection and if he
needs me to start, I’m ready."
