Victory on Saturday kept Martin Allen’s Gillingham top of League 2 and the manager described the day as "magical".

Four different scorers helped the Gills towards a 4-1 win over Burton.

Allen, pictured, said: “It was a fantastic atmosphere and it was a magical afternoon, with good football and good entertainment.

“Burton have some good players who can win games and they are a really good team and so that was a good result and a good performance. I don’t think it was the best of the season but it was three points and that’s good.”

The Gills went into the break 2-0 ahead but that was halved early in the second half.

Any worries of Burton coming back into the game ended with quick-fire goals from Myles Weston and Joe Martin.

“All credit to the players, they came back well,” said Allen.

“I didn’t do anything; the players did it. I just let them get on with it. Sometimes that technical area can be a bit scary but it was good.”

A season-best attendance of 7,268 was bolstered by young supporters taking advantage of the club’s “quid a kid” offer.

“Let’s hope those children enjoyed their day,” Allen said.

“It was a great atmosphere, a lot of singing and I thought the music was great. That is all part of the entertainment of coming to football. It was really good. I hope those children and their parents come back in the future.”

Gillingham had an abundance of first-half chances and had they taken them all it would have seen Allen’s prediction come true.

“I didn’t expect that, I expected six. I thought we were going to win by six,” he admitted.

“We have the players to do it and we have the power, the passion and the professionalism.

“I saw a Gillingham supporter on Friday night and he said it would be nice to win two or three nil. I said ‘don’t be silly, it would be nice to win 6-0’.

“I wanted it to be six and I know that if we play like I know we can and with the crowd, who are just amazing, the players absolutely thrive off that. It is such a good place to come and play football.”
