Chris Whelpdale insists the Gills have yet to find top gear.

Despite sitting clear at the top of League 2, the midfielder believes the team have much more to offer.

On Saturday the Gills beat Aldershot 4-0. But Whelpdale, who scored Gillingham’s fourth goal, said: "I still think we have a lot more to go.

"We are only in third or fourth gear and I think there is a lot more to come from everyone. I have seen what we can do in training and the potential from everyone in our team. I definitely believe we can step it up another gear."

Whelpdale hopes his goal is the start of things to come for him, as he targets the 12-goal mark he set last season.

"I am looking to get close to that at least," he said. "Last year a lot of the goals came in the second half of the season and hopefully I can do that again this year."

He has hit the net three times this season in a team where goals have come from all quarters. Eleven different players have been on the scoresheet so far.

Whelpdale has played a part for the Gills in the previous two seasons and hopes that now, under the management of Martin Allen, they can make it third time lucky.

"Hopefully we can build on Saturday’s win and keep going stronger," he said.

"The manager doesn’t let our standards drop in training and he believes that you should perform in training like you do in the game. The standards here are high."

Can Chris Whelpdale get near the 12-goal mark he set last season? Have your say below.
