Gillingham assistant boss Ian Hendon labelled the moment that cost their side the points as "comical" after Torquay levelled with the last kick of the game.

An injury-time free-kick from Kevin Nicholson cancelled out Cody McDonald's 80th minute goal and Hendon bemoaned another costly individual error as the ball went in under keeper Alan Julian.

"It feels like a defeat as we thought we had the points in the bag," he said.

"To concede how we did late on was very disappointing. Yet again it's another individual error and it's cost us dear.

“We had the ball in their final third and gave it away. The ball got played into the middle of the park and we put no pressure on it, then their lads turned and plays the ball in. Whether it was a foul I don't know. There was a coming together but what happens after that is comical. It's a goalkeeping error.”

The Gills lost Curtis Weston early in the game as he aggravated a thigh injury, captain Barry Fuller was playing despite a sickness bug and manager Andy Hessenthaler missed the second half through a similar illness.

Despite that the Gills seemed destined for the three points after McDonald hit his fifth of the season.

"It was a great goal from Cody," said the assistant boss. "That was fit to win any game of football, he's taken it well and I feel for him. We seem to be giving goals away at the moment and we are having to work hard to get ours.

"We got our noses in front and it should have stayed that way. It's a bitter pill to swallow."
