August Bank Holiday weekend weather is no match for last year's heatwave

Believe it or not, but this time last year we were basking in a bank holiday heatwave.

But this weekend's gloomy weather front shows no sign of shifting any time soon, so you might want to ditch the sun cream for a Sou'wester instead.

The Met Office says today will be a cloudy start with showers expected to linger around coastal areas, though drier and brighter weather is expected inland.

Winds will ease throughout the afternoon with temperatures peaking at 19°C.

Only earlier in the month hordes of sun-worshippers were heading for the beaches as the mercury hit the high 30s.

And it's a far cry from this time last year when temperatures soared across the county - with the hottest late August Bank Holiday Monday ever recorded.

Heathrow notched up 33.2°C (91.8F) - beating its previous August Bank Holiday record of 31.5°C in 2001 - but the late summer sun had been preceded by a largely soggy and windy month.

Just a few weeks ago, little ones like two-year-old Elliott Harden, were cooling down with an ice cream on Kent's beaches

In July 2019, Cambridge took Kent's crown as the country's hot spot, recording 38.7°C. The previous record was 38.5°C in Faversham in August 2003.
