Seven weeks ago, Jim Gilbourne was left fighting for his life after being hit by a car while walking to church with his children. His family feared the worst but held onto hope.

Today, the smiling faces of the Gilbourne family say it all. It has been the story of a remarkable recovery against all the odds.

Mr Gilbourne, from Wilson Avenue, Rochester, was critically injured after being struck by a car in Chatham on April 27.

He is still in a wheelchair but is slowly improving from his terrible injuries. The 42-year-old bank executive said he was particularly thankful to his wife Hester.

“She has had so much to cope with yet has shown magnificent courage, strength and love throughout.

“The level of encouragement and support from our family and friends has also been fantastic.”
