Heat wave security warning

Thieves will target properties with open windows

POLICE have issued a warning to people to be security concious in a bid to prevent burglars targeting houses where windows have been left open.

In the current hot weather it is much more comfortable with windows and doors open, but police say this encourages opportunist thieves.

PC Warren Jarvis said: "I appreciate that it is tempting to leave a window or door open during the warm weather, however if you do go out or are asleep it is safer to close them.

"Often thieves will wander a neighbourhood looking for open windows and opportunities to break into your home.

"I would also warn residents that it is not uncommon for burglars to target houses whilst the occupants are hard at work in the back garden."

Meanwhile, police officers in Thanet will be waking residents if patrols notice homes have been left insecure during the night.

A leaflet will also be delivered to warn homeowners. The leaflets say: "We found your home insecure. You were visited by the good guys - next time you may not be so lucky." The reverse side offers advice on basic home security.

Acting chief inspector Ken Elmes said: "We have already called upon a few homes where we have spotted windows and on occasion even front doors left open. We have found that most people are both grateful and reassured by this police action."
