Secretary of State for Defence Geoff Hoon speaks to members of HMS Chatham

THE crew of HMS Chatham, currently on patrol in the Gulf, yesterday met Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon. The type 22 frigate is one of 30 warships supporting the amphibious task group in the Gulf.

It is currently part of the Maritime Interdiction Force blockading, stopping and searching vessels to prevent the illegal exportation of oil and goods from Iraq. But in the event of war being declared, the ship would be sent into theatre.

Mr Hoon, who was welcomed on board by Capt Michael Cochrane and Rear Admiral David Snelson, UK Maritime Component Commander, Bahrain.

Mr Hoon said: "One thing that I have learnt in the three and a half years I've been doing this job is that there is a great deal of talent, ability and experience in the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom and I know you will demonstrate your very considerable experience and expertise at the very highest level."

Anyone wishing to check the frigate's progress, within security restrictions, can tune into her own website: www.royal-navy.mod.uk
