Firefighters are still at the scene of a blaze at Snodland Paper Mill, Snodland, nearly 24 hours after it started.

At its height the fire, which began in a waste compacter at about 5.30pm yesterday, spread to 500 tons of baled paper.

Ten pumps plus specialist appliances from stations including Strood, Marden, Larkfield, Halling, Borough Green, Ashford, Maidstone, Paddock Wood and Faversham were at the scene.

Crews used water from the River Medway and on-site hydrants to fight the blaze.

By 11.34pm firefighters had managed to confine the fire to a single stack of paper and by 12.30pm the operation was scaled down to four pumps and now to three pumps.

No one is believed to have been hurt.
