A former Royal Engineer has told of the ‘awe-inspiring’ sight as hundreds take part in a Help for Heroes cycle ride.

Around 300 soldiers, many from Kent, set off from Normandy on Monday on the 360-mile route, which ends today in Paris.

Steve Craddock, who is leading the group, said he has been overwhelmed at the efforts from those involved.

On the first two days wreaths were laid to commemorate D Day and also for British forces and those from Chatham (Royal Engineers).

The group hopes to be in Paris by 4pm – cycling down the Champs Elysee and laying wreaths at the Arc de Triomphe.

Fifteen ex-Royal Engineers from Chatham will lay a wreath for the Sappers who have died in the two world wars, and those serving now.

The ride, which includes 260 cyclists, injured soldiers, Lieutenant Generals and marines, finishes at the Eiffel Tower.

The group hopes to raise £1 million for the charity.
