Immigration official faces corruption charge

A 40-year-old immigration officer from Kent has appeared in court charged with corruption.

Babs Carew, of Parsonage Manorway, Belvedere, was charged with the offence at Lewisham police station on January 8. He appeared before District Judge Kelly at Greenwich Magistrates' Court on Friday morning.

The charge follows an investigation by the Metropolitan Police's Directorate of Professional Standards into alleged corrput activity.

Carew, whose wife is understood to suffer from cancer, was granted unconditional bail until the next hearing in March. He has not yet indicated a plea.
