An inquest has been opened into the death of a man who fell off a cliff during the Easter weekend.

The victim was identified as Jrzegorz Romanuk, a 34-year-old laundry porter.

Coroner’s officer David Lewis told the hearing that Mr Romanuk had been walking along the clifftop at Capel with friends on Easter Sunday when he fell off the edge.

His body was recovered at the foot of the cliff and he was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene.

A post mortem examination confirmed he had died from a neck injury.

Mr Romanuk was a married man who lived in Cross Stile, Ashford.

The inquest at Ashford was adjourned by deputy coroner Christine Freedman, with a new hearing date to be confirmed.

Mr Romanuk’s fall had prompted a massive rescue operation involving a helicopter and firefighters climbing down the cliff face to reach him.

He fell 200 to 250ft after walking above The Warren, Capel-le-Ferne and the alarm was raised by his friends soon after 1.30pm.

Dover Coastguard was scrambled and Dover and Folkestone fire crews were also called, along with a line rescue team from Deal.

The exact circumstances of the death are still being investigated but immediately after the tragedy coastguards put out a general warning to walkers.

They said people should stick to the cliff path, which is safely away from the edge, and warned that the edges of the cliffs can crumble.
