An inquest into the death of a pensioner who was killed on the A249 has been opened and adjourned today.

Alfred Cole’s body was found on the dual carriageway near Bobbing in the early hours of Wednesday, July 25.

The 82-year-old had been a resident at Mill House care home in Salters Lane, Faversham.

He had gone missing from there 10 days earlier, but returned after being found in Cardiff.

But five days later, on July 20, Mr Cole disappeared again - this time from the Ashford area.

Police closed off the A249 for nearly seven hours after his body was discovered and appealed for witnesses.

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Cole had died from multiple injuries.

An inquest was opened by Mid Kent and Medway coroner Patricia Harding at Archbishop’s Palace, Maidstone, today.

A full hearing will be held at a later date, which is yet to be decided.

After recovering a lorry in France, police questioned a British man in relation to the death but he was released without charge.
